Resource Scheduling and Optimisation

With ever increasing pressure on field service organisations or internal service departments to deliver faster and more agile services at lower and lower cost, there is greater and greater emphasis being placed on ensuring that work schedules are optimised and resources fully utilised.  Although responsiveness and service levels are critical; just as critical is how the service requirement is managed behind the scenes. Effective service scheduling will take into consideration such things as which engineer has the skills to fix the specific problem, the distance that engineer will need to travel to get to the job, and what parts the engineer will need to have on hand.

In a traditional maintenance environment, although there may be critical work, the number of technicians and work orders needing to be scheduled is relatively low and the factors affecting who should do which work are straight-forward.   As such, the scheduling capbilities of work and asset management packages such as Maximo are often judged to be good enough.  What is missed however, is any real insight into how good the scheduling could have been.

In the faster-moving service arena, with the potential for hundreds of technician and thousands of tasks, the ability to schedule manually using traditional work management tools is impossible.
